Broward County Black Chamber of Commerce Encourages Entrepreneurs to Get in the Weed Game

Over fifty entrepreneurs filed into a conference room at the Urban League of Broward County with one thing on their minds.

Particularly the business opportunities around one of the fastest growing industries in America, the medical marijuana industry.

The Broward County Black Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization promoting growth of businesses between members of the black community in Broward County.

This organization was founded in 2018 and holds events like, Getting in the Game: Medical Marijuana Industry in Florida, to foster economic growth and opportunity.

Shaheewa Jarrett, the founder of the Broward County Black Chamber of Commerce, organizes these events to help the black community prosper.

“We want to make sure we connect individuals to the resources they need, especially business owners.” She said.

Medical marijuana was legalized in the state of Florida back in November 2016, yet questions regarding the legality of the industry has kept many entrepreneurs away.

Bryan Cunningham, the Urban League of Broward County’s division manager of the Entrepreneurship Center, was intrigued by this event to bring awareness to the budding opportunities with marijuana.

“The stigmas with marijuana have been dropping. Now you don’t have to hide in the closet anymore. We are bringing some dignity to it.” Cunningham said.

Medical marijuana has many benefits as research shows that it can be helpful for patients with the following illnesses:

· Anxiety

· Cancer/Chemotherapy

· Chronic Pain

· Crohn’s Disease/IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease)

· Depression

· Glaucoma

· Hepatitis C

· Lou Gehrig’s Disease/ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis)

· Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

· Parkinson’s Disease (including Early-Onset)

· PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)

· Rheumatoid Arthritis

With all of these medical benefits, the market for marijuana is large and growing each day. The opportunities to make money in this industry are widespread.

“You don’t have to touch the plant to make money,” Scheril Murray Powell explains.

Powell is a Florida lawyer who specializes in cannabis and was the keynote speaker for the Getting in the Game event. She urges entrepreneurs to open their eyes about the marijuana industry because there are many avenues to get involved.

“The people that made the most money during the gold rush were the people selling the axes and the shovels. Same goes with the marijuana industry.” Powell said.

The prohibition on marijuana is slowly coming to an end, with 31 states having already made medical marijuana legal and eight states making it legal recreationally.

The longer a state has had marijuana legalized, the more money that state generates from cannabis sales.

Since Florida only legalized medical marijuana two years ago, the state is only scratching the surface of the financial benefits it will one day produce.

There are not many industries in the United States that are expected to see that kind of growth in the coming years.

Which is why entrepreneurs are trying to get in the game.
